    Colonial origins

The history of Philippine rum is intimately linked to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, who introduced intensive sugarcane cultivation. The Philippines, with their ideal tropical climate, quickly became one of Asia's main sugar producers.

    The birth of Tanduay (1854)

It was in 1854 that the first major distillery was born: Tanduay. Founded in Hagonoy, in the province of Bulacan, it takes its name from the Tanduay district of Manila. This house quickly became the symbol of Philippine distillation expertise.

    Industry growth

In the 20th century, rum production grew considerably, particularly on the island of Negros, nicknamed "Sugarlandia" for its vast sugarcane plantations. Local distilleries perfected their techniques, developing unique aromatic profiles.

    The modern era: Don Papa

In 2012, a new chapter was written with the creation of Bleeding Heart Rum Company and its flagship brand: Don Papa. Founded by Stephen Carroll, this house pays tribute to Dionisio Magbuelas, known as "Papa Isio", a local hero of the Philippine revolution against Spain. Don Papa revolutionized the image of Philippine rum internationally with its modern approach and distinctive aromatic profiles.

    Today

Philippine rum is experiencing growing worldwide recognition. Tanduay has become the world's best-selling rum by volume, while Don Papa has established itself in premium European markets. Independent bottlers also contribute to enriching the offering with unique and sought-after editions.
